The Right Distance, nominated as for best picture, best director and best actress in the 2008 Italian Oscars, provides Festival patrons with a good murder mystery. The film, directed by Carlo Mazzacurati, brings in contemporary issues like anti-foreign prejudices, arranged marriages, kids with computer skills that adults lack and how these changes disrupt life in a small town.

The title refers to the advice that a newspaper editor gives to Giovanni on how to be a good reporter…”don’t get too close to your subjects, maintain your objectivity”….which he does not follow, but still gets the best story. The film is skillful in keeping the journalistic theme alive, without distracting the audience from the study of characters and locale, that makes it such an interesting story. The Right Distance is an entertaining film and a well-told tale.

Running time: 106 minutes.
