Heralded for its spectacular scenery, heartwarming message, fine acting, and a question pondered through the centuries, 100 Nails is the most serious and though-provoking film in the 2010 Italian Film Festival line-up. While the photography and scenery were wonderful, this self-proclaimed “last work”, by legendary master film-maker Ermanno Olmi, poses one of the director’s profound religious statements on the human condition.

In a startling prologue, the overseer of an ancient library screams out in horror and summons the authorities when he discovers 100 rare manuscripts nailed to the floor. The film then follows a young theology professor from the University of Bologna, as he retreats from his complex university life to a deserted farmhouse on the River Po.

100 Nails was awarded nominations for Best Director, Best Cinematography and Best Film in the David di Donatello competition in 2007, the equivalent to our Academy Awards. It also won the Critics Award from the Torino Piedmont Film Commission.

Running time: 94 minutes.
