Internet Movie Database (IMBd) users are effusive with their comments about Malena. Nine or ten stars (out of a possible ten) have been rewarded to this sensitive drama by those who have screened the film.

Famed Italian director, Giuseppe Tornatore (Cinema Paradiso) , weaves a haunting tale of a distractingly beautiful Malena (played by Monica Bellucci) dealing with the apparent lose of her husband who goes off to war.  Her sadness is heightened by the vicious gossip spread by the women of the village and lustful stares of the local men. A particular admirer of her beauty is 12-year old Renato, who becomes obsessed with her and starts to fantasize about her, as teenage boys might do.

Absolutely stunning photography and heart-breakingly beautiful music accentuate the movies themes of sadness, loss, courage and the coming-of-age fascination by Renato. Malena received Academy Award nominations for best cinematography and best score. The Los Angeles Times film critic calls Malena “A Trimph!”. The Washington Post dubbed it “Genuinely Erotic” and the San Francisco Chronicle gave it four stars and called it “A Full-Fledged Masterpiece.”

Malena runs 92 minutes.
